The Alpha Course - My Experience
Friday, 9 December 2011
When a good friend of mine, who’s recently begun her journey of faith, approached me and asked me if I wanted to attend the Alpha Course with her I was slightly apprehensive. After doing a bit of research on the Alpha course and, not being one to turn down a challenge, I accepted!
Being a non-Christian I found the first few sessions hard to get my head round and a bit intense but I was relieved to discover that the people attending Alpha were of all ages, all at different points in their journey with God and not at all what I had imagined (they weren’t singing hymns and preaching at me!).
During each session there is a talk and then a discussion within a small group you are placed in at the beginning of the Alpha Course. This part of Alpha was my favourite.
I adored my group. A variety of ages, different backgrounds and different views on faith made for some very interesting discussions! And every week I felt closer to those people in my group who, not only took the time to listen to my points of view without judging, but who so willingly shared their thoughts and feelings. I felt, and still feel, privileged to listen to what they had to say.
As my journey on the Alpha Course comes to an end I’m not quite sure where I go from here. I wouldn’t say that I’m a fully blown Christian but I have definitely learnt a lot about faith and myself and I now have a feeling of inner peace and I know in myself that I’m a lot happier.
I always thought there was something up there, I just didn’t know what. And after meeting so many lovely people who have experienced God first hand and people whose faith has been tested to the limit yet still believe in the goodness of God I do wish to carry on my journey.
Overall the Alpha Course has changed my life. I feel so much happier and content and I know that I’m never going to be alone. I just want to say thank you to everyone at Alpha, especially the people in my group, for making my life feel vibrant again.
I hope God continues to work for each and every one of them and brings them happiness and contentment throughout their lives.
